About this deal

The other woman, Marigold, heavily tattooed, has a rather obvious crush on their tablemate, Whit Metters, and the fourth is a handsome fellow named Cain McLeod. I raced through this story like there was no tomorrow, devouring the words on my kindle, my imagination running riot in a city I’d never visited but felt so familiar with. It was fun to guess along with Leo (one of the characters, perhaps a nemesis) as he tossed around theories. It is as though Hannah is mining her story from this other individual (Leo in the letters, not Leo in the “story”) which prompts him to obsess over her, then he takes it too far, and those stakes are played over the dynamics of the murder that is the focus of Gentill’s book. Hannah is being stalked by Leo while writing about Freddie, who is engaging with friends she met at a murder scene, and is also writing about the people she met the day a woman was murder in the Boston Public Library.

Don’t worry, I will not spoil anything for you but I did not see any of that coming at all as I was enjoying each chapter. Lend your skills to GWL, or learn new skills working alongside the GWL Team Come to one of our many events! Her main character, Winifred ‘Freddie’ Kinkaid is also an author, working on a new book in the inspiring setting of the Boston Public Library. The relationships among the friends are well developed, and, as Freddie gradually falls in love with McLeod, you hope she’s not getting in over her head. Award-winning author Sulari Gentill delivers a sharply thrilling read with The Woman in the Library, an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship and shows us that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all.

Instead we have to deduce her responses with each new piece of correspondence and her actions in writing her story. As Gentill’s characters grow, the desire to know more about each ensnares us, and the only way out is to read to the end. In the story-within-a-story, Cain survives surgery, and his and Freddie’s love for each other is cemented. The book opens with Leo – a wannabe author, writing to fellow author Hannah, who he admires but hasn’t met.

The very end could be taken as sweet, if you don’t pay any attention and want to see the best in people. Dervla McTiernan, author of The Murder Rule`Wickedly clever, highly original and thoroughly entertaining - I loved it! He is aware of protests in the United States over the killing of unarmed Black people in police custody and even the idea of unconscious bias, but he feels tricked by Hannah’s failure to include defined racial markers.I found the character development to be excellent, however, the story-within-a -story and its complexities did not work for me. So, what you are reading are the chapters in Hannah’s novel, concerning Freddie and her new friends. Also if you do read this, I suggest googling the Boston Public Library reading room, to see where Freddie is sitting and staring at the ceiling, looking for inspiration. The Woman in the Library ] is a mystery-within-a-mystery, with the clues in Freddie's story becoming more intriguing as Leo's advice becomes more sinister.
